Aegina

Aegina, with a rich history since ancient times, is today a tourist attraction and a popular weekend destination for Athenians. In ancient times, the island was a naval power that rivaled Athens, and it is famous for being the first city-state to issue coins in Europe.

The island is full of interesting sites, including the famous Temple of Aphea, dedicated to the goddess Athena. The temple is said to be one of the vertices of an equilateral triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion.

Aegina Town, the island's capital, was the provisional capital of the new Greek state (1827-1829) and is renowned for its well-preserved neoclassical mansions, built to house the first seat of government.
